Ensuring Sterile Storage Compliance with AS/NZS 4187:2014
Health services must follow AS/NZS 4187:2014 to keep reprocessed medical devices safe and sterile. This means separating sterile items from contaminated or in-process devices and storing them in clean, dry, and dust-free areas, away from moisture, sunlight, and vibration. Shelving should be non-corrosive, allow airflow, and keep items off the floor to prevent contamination.
Clear packaging, labelling, and traceability are essential. Devices must be intact, marked with expiry dates, and tracked through every stage of reprocessing. Stock rotation using first-in, first-out principles, minimal handling, and safe transport in covered containers all help maintain sterility. Storage environments must be controlled for temperature and humidity, and surfaces (including shelves, walls, and floors) should be easy to clean. Staff must be trained in proper handling, stock management, and maintaining separation between clean and dirty items.
Following AS/NZS 4187:2014 isn’t just about shelving, it’s about creating an organised, traceable system that protects patient safety from reprocessing to point of use.
