Stanton Library
Custom Library Shelving, Book Storage & Seating
About Stanton Library
Opened in 1964, Stanton Library has been an integral part of the North Sydney community for more than 60 years. Today, the library provides a diverse range of resources, services and community programs, while also housing the North Sydney Heritage Centre and its significant collections of local history, archives, photographs and oral histories. As a long-standing community and cultural hub, Stanton Library continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of its visitors.
The Project
IntraSpace was engaged to revitalise the children’s reading area at Stanton Library, improving book storage and creating a more inviting and engaging space for young library users.
The project involved replacing older book tubs with new custom-designed storage, introducing taller shelving to accommodate more books, and transforming the existing bay window area into a dedicated reading space with custom curved seating.
A key element of the project was a bespoke book shelving solution designed and built around an existing structural column, making better use of the available space while integrating seamlessly with the library’s existing environment.
The IntraSpace Solution
IntraSpace designed, manufactured and installed a complete custom solution comprising:
- Large and small custom IntraSpace tub units with clear acrylic book tubs for accessible book display and storage.
- Custom curved seating designed specifically for the existing bay window area.
- Bespoke curved and straight book shelving designed around the existing structural column, incorporating fixed and adjustable shelving.
- Custom rear panels and a Laminex Parchment-finished slatwall panel to complete the integrated shelving solution.
Designed for the Space
Rather than supplying generic, off-the-shelf solutions, IntraSpace worked with the existing architecture and layout to create furniture and shelving specifically suited to the space.
The custom shelving makes use of the area around the existing column, while the curved seating transforms the bay window into a dedicated reading destination. Every element was designed to combine practical storage with a more welcoming and engaging environment for children.
The Result
The completed project has created a more functional, flexible and inviting children’s reading area, with improved book storage and better use of the available space.
The new curved seating provides children with a comfortable place to read, relax and enjoy the library, encouraging them to linger longer and spend more time in the space.
